This is a little project that I have taken on recently, I think these are really cute and they also make the perfect gift for someone.
Everything for this DIY was bought at IKEA apart from the compost that you can buy in loads of places if you don't already have a bag. If you are on a budget another option for this is to use things from your garden, you probably already have most of this stuff and these also look really cute in jam jars or other larger jars that you would probably throw away. Another option is to make this a bit fancier if you have a bigger budget and you can buy some really nice terrariums about if you want to make this a bit more special.
The first thing you want to do is to fill the bottom of the vase (or whatever you are using) with compost, it is important to put compost in the bottom as the plant will need something to soak up the water and to dig its roots into. You want to pat down your layers in between each time to make sure that they are even and can be seen clearly from the sides.
I then put a layer of little brown stones over the top, these came in a massive bag for really cheap at IKEA so I will definitely be making more of these. Next I put another little layer of compost, at this stage it is important to remember that your plant has to fit in as well as I found myself getting slightly ahead and forgetting to leave space. So depending on how big your container is and how big your plants are you may want to put them in and fill the sides. I then put a layer of shiny black rocks that I had also got from IKEA, these were super cheap and can be used in plant pots and flower beds as well as put in other places around your home. Another layer of the small rocks and then I finished it off with a layer of larger greyish rocks that I found in my garden.
This was super east to make (although very messy) and can be made with an sort of succulent or cactus like plant.
The best thing is you don't have to water them frequently and they are almost impossible to kill.
